Nugent To Test Free Agent Market

Good Morning All -

Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Jets place kicker Mike Nugent is set to test the free agent market on Friday. After the Jets spent an early 2nd round pick on the kicker from Ohio State, Nugent pieced together four par, to sub-par seasons. Although the organization offered him a new contract to stay, the kicker declined and would rather move on. From a fan's point of view, Nugent just never came around to living up to his hype after being considered worthy of such an early (and ill advised) pick on Draft Day.

"The Jets have been really cool about the situation and gave me time to decide whether to stay," Nugent told The Star-Ledger in response to an e-mail Tuesday. "They approached us last week to re-sign, and also called again this week, and gave us a chance to talk about making a decision.

"I have so much respect for the organization and my teammates, but I feel it might be time for me to move on. (General manager) Mike (Tannenbaum), (director of football operations) Ari (Nissim) and the coaches have been incredibly understanding of my decision process and I am really grateful to them."

As for next year's kicker, the Jets are expected to re-sign Jay Feely come Friday. Feely had a solid year with the team last season, and to be honest I was more comfortable with him kicking then Nugent anyway. I'm sure many other Jets fans would agree...
