Rich Cimini, writer of the Jets Stream on the NY Daily News, wrote an interesting article about how the Jets could/should be interested in signing the possible soon-to-be free agent wide receiver Torry Holt, of the St. Louis Rams.Henry Ellard is the Jets' new receivers coach, the same Ellard who served as Holt's position coach for seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. If that doesn't give the Jets an advantage in terms of recruiting and insider knowledge, what does?
You can't disagree with Cimini on that point. It also makes for a very nice fit.
Torry Holt has had a great career in the NFL, and although he's reaching his final years I believe he can still play the game at an above average level. Yes his numbers were down last year, but he played on a terrible Rams team that was built to run the ball and had quarterback issues throughout the season.
I certainly don't think Holt is the answer to the Jets receiver issues, but it would be a good signing before going into the draft. He is sure-handed, experienced, hard working, reliable, and professional. Although no longer a serious down field threat, defenses still need to account for Holt on the field, and he would be an upgrade over any receiver the team currently has to start alongside Jerricho Cotchery.
In the short term, it's a signing I'd welcome as a Jets fan. It will be interesting to see how this pans out if/when Holt is released before March 17th.
