Brian Cashman has told the media that the injury plaguing his star third baseman is actually a torn labrum, and that surgery could keep him off the diamond for up to 4 months.
Since that means Rodriguez missing the majority of the season, the Yankees will sit down and discuss the possibility of him playing through the injury.
This is a developing story, but for now, the earlier stories of A-Rod being out up to 10 weeks are false; we will continue monitoring the situation as more information is released.
While Rodriguez could certainly play through this injury and be effective, the Yankees may want to consider the long term damage that could be done.
Since the team has virtually no options to replace A-Rod at third and he is the focal point of the lineup, it becomes a very tough situation.
We all know the Yankees are built to win now, but it may be wiser to rely on the much improved pitching staff to keep the team in the playoff race, and shut the slugger down until the late summer.
Unfortunately for the Yanks, the already tough AL East got even better this off season and good pitching may not be enough.
